"Slanted Sun's Last Call"Original Oil on Canvas

Through this piece, I wanted to capture how everything slows down at the end of the day. I can hear the sounds of the birds, crickets, frogs and alligators as the birds slowly push their beaks through the sky colored water to find tiny bits to eat. I can imagine the slight swishing of the grass on grass when a breeze blows through. The daytime animals are receding to their resting places, while the nighttime dwellers begin to emerge.

Surrounded by glowing pink, orange, and yellow colors, these birds are having their evening meal amongst the water and grasses. Side by side they vie for the swimming morsels below, pausing for a moment to look up to see what has caught the others attention.

I enjoyed creating a painting where the triangular shapes in the grasses mimicked those areas of negative space the birds legs create as they step.

Collection

I began this new collection "Ugly Pretty" to show the juxtaposition between the oftentimes bald wrinkled head of the bird against the gorgeous bright colors of the body. The way light filters through the feathers or reflects back off gives me a sense of how the mood of the day sits on the birds plumage.

The color and shine of the birds eyes draw me into their depths as if I am a part of the birds daily thoughts. I can feel their personalities by their body gestures.

I wanted to convey a sense of these personalities paired with the beauty that surrounds these birds everyday. Even the dark mud on their feet at times just points out more color, texture and contrast.

A new change for my pieces is the additional texture on the canvas.

I love the way the lights and dark's pair up to create a greater sense of depth when looking at the image.

These lights and shadows coming from the impasto, changes with the light. I hope you enjoy these new additions to my works as much as I have in making them.
